Located beyond the sculpture lounge, the Benjamin and Lillian K. Snowiss Galleries survey American art from the long nineteenth century (1789–1914). Concentrations of works of art address relationships between portraits and power, as well as landscape and mythmaking. The double-height pavilion gallery is maximized with a salon style installation of paintings. Both the local (the history of artmaking in Pennsylvania) and the global (depictions from locales such as Italy and India) are explored. Amid vivid impressionist paintings, visitors are invited to slow down and take in the impressive northerly views of the Arboretum.
